We’ve just come through Oral Cancer Awareness Month. But even though we’re into May, there’s never a bad time to educate others about oral cancer. Awareness of oral cancer is limited, and unfortunately, most diagnoses aren’t made until the disease is already in a late stage. By then, it’s difficult to successfully treat oral cancer.
That’s why early detection is so important. When found early, the cure rate is much higher.
And how is oral cancer found early?
With a comprehensive oral cancer screening. During a comprehensive oral cancer screening, Dr. Mark Iacovino will check your smile for all the tell-tale signs of oral cancer—signs which can be hard to spot unless you’re actively looking for them.
What are we looking for? Signs of oral cancer can include:
- A sore that bleed easily or doesn’t heal.
- A color change of the oral tissues.
- A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust, or small, eroded area.
- Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips.
Why Are Oral Cancer Screenings So Important?
Because oral cancer doesn’t just affect smokers over the age of 40 anymore. More and more, younger patients with none of the common risk factors are finding themselves susceptible to oral cancer.
Why?
Because of the Human Papillomavirus.
In many cases involving women and men alike, it was HPV that caused the patient to develop oral cancer—not smoking or excessive drinking.
